// DAS DIESJÄHRIGE FILMPROGRAMM

// THIS YEAR´S FILM PROGRAMME

Over 2200 entries have been submitted by artists from more than 60 countries, proof of the renewed considerable international interest in the 24th European Media Art Festival (EMAF), Osnabrück. Current works comprising current short and long films, sound and media projects, performances and installations have been submitted from all parts of the globe. Many contributions were received from North America and Europe, as well as films from Israel, the Lebanon, Mozambique, Iran and several films from the Asia, from the Philippines to China.
The four-member committee, comprising Jennifer Jones from Cologne, Katrin Mundt from Essen and Florian Wüst from Berlin under the leadership of Ralf Sausmikat (EMAF), started viewing the film and video entries at the start of January. By mid-March, all of the works will have been viewed and a selection made of the contributions to be presented in Osnabrück between 27 April and 1 May 2011. In addition, excellent works will be awarded with a variety of prizes at the festival by an international jury. Besides the “EMAF Award”, the “Dialogpreis” by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the “Prize for the best German experimental film”, a “Newcomer Award” will also be presented for the first time.
This year, EMAF will be taking part in the celebrations to mark the 150-year friendship between Japan and Germany. Hence this year’s focus on Japanese Media Art Now. Anime and manga productions, which fascinate millions in Japan, will take the centre stage of the film programmes.

Accreditations for the 24th European Media Art Festival can be registered on our website www.emaf.de from 15 February 2011.

EMAF Touring Programme

‎in Dundee, Scottland, at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Tue 8 Feb, 6pm

“We are delighted to host the only Scottish screening of this European Media Art Festival touring programme.

PERSONAL HISTORIES - EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL TOUR

Film screening: 8 February, 6 - 8pm This 80 minute programme presents works dealing with history, narratives and memories and includes the three prize-winning films at EMAF 2010. Free - All Welcome - Musical Interludes

Since visiting EMAF a couple of years ago I have been encouraging artists I know to submit works and to visit the festival. It’s a great event, with a really friendly atmosphere and focus on quality. I also found it a good place to meet people and have worked with a couple of people that I met there since.

The festival info speaks for itself in terms of standards:

The EMAF is one of the most influential forums of international Media Art. As a meeting point for artists, curators, distributors, gallery owners and an audience of specialists, the festival has a great impact on the topic and aesthetics of Media Art.

Each year the festival offers its visitors a current overview of new experimental films, performances, lectures, an exhibition and the Media Campus. Around 250 current contributions will be selected this year for the festival from a total of 2400 submitted works, offering a comprehensive insight into the latest tendencies in Media Art.

We are very pleased to have the EMAF tour programme playing in Dundee. We are the only venue in Scotland to book for Personal Histories and we have made a real night of it with responsive performances by Erstlaub and Rhythm Machine” (organised by Paul Gault - N_ILK)

Here is the programme for Personal Histories :

Cómo dibujar animales tristes… / Pere Ginard & Laura Gines / E 2009 / 4:34

‘How to draw sad animals or notebook of all the living and dead things that I imagined the night you went away forever’.

Tree of Forgetting / Dan Boord & Luis Valdovino / USA 2009 / 8:43

The world’s shortest short story takes a detour to a place where time is a forking path of possibilities leading to the same eventuality – the past. A place where it was possible to vanish among family and friends and where the places and things of everyday life may also take on horrific features and meanings.

Nacht um Olympia / Timo Schierhorn / D 2009 / 15:00 // Best German Experimental 2010

An essayistic approach to the person of one’s own father, who only exists in the form of images and old movies. The examination of the found footage leads to re-enactments such as Christmas celebrations and work-outs for sports tournaments.

Tri-ger. / Eitan Efrat & Sirah Foighel Bruttmann / Israel/NL/B 2009 / 9:00

In this trilogy, the filmmaker sketches his turbulent family history - heavily influenced by his own experiences on the battlefields. The first part tells the story of the filmmaker’s proud grandfather. The story of the second generation takes the form of a dance film about the fallen heroes of the nation. In the last part, the director sits behind his drum kit, playing a strict military march with venom.

Red Herring / Nico Herbst / USA 2009 / 7:14

Part of a series of works based on an idiosyncratic method of portraiture–or even a form of anti-portraiture–specific to the porosity of video.

5 lessons and 9 questions about Chinatown / Shelly Silver / USA 2010 / 10:00 // Dialogue Award 2010

10 square blocks, past, present, future, time, light, movement, immigration, exclusion, gentrification, racism, history, China, America, 3 languages, 13 voices, 152 years, 17,820 frames, 9 minutes, 54 seconds, 9 questions, 5 lessons, Chinatown.

Film für übers Sofa (Film for Above the Sofa) / Daniel Kötter & Hannes Seidl / D 2009 / 11:37

‘Sometimes you need to produce paintings to be hung above the sofa’, (Martin Kippenberger).

Katharina Kellermann and Frank Max Müller accumulate objects. They arrange and re-arrange the set, they push, pile up and tear apart. They produce sound, movement, noise, film, music. While the cadre is rearranged and reinterpreted again and again, the soundtrack accumulates musical traces of what has visually already disappeared.

Sisäinen lähiö (Suburb Within) / Pekka Sassi / FIN 2009 / 11:20 // EMAF-Award 2010

A film about communication, narration and presence. ›Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called present.‹

The programme will be screened on Tuesday night with musical interludes from local musicians then will be played on a loop between 10am and 4pm on Wednesday 9 February in the space.

Centrespace is located in the Visual Research Centre, on the lower floors of Dundee Contemporary Arts. VRC is managed by Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee. EMAF ArtBox

EMAF ArtBox, Jan. 18 - March 1, 2011:

Daniel Burkhardt
RAUSCHEN & BRAUSEN I
Germany 2007, DVD, Loop, 5:00 Min.

At 2008’s EMAF the Digital Sparks Award was given to Rauschen & Brausen I, the videopart of a multilayered installation by Daniel Burkhardt. The award giving jury stated: »The image of a skyscraper facade, tristesse and urbanity. A zoom releases us from the representation and sets us in motion. The composition of image and sound evolves a maelstrom into the unforeseen and into a bottomless abyss«
Burkhardt manages to create a challenging artwork from the daily traffic in front of an apartment building. As starting point serves a 16 minute static recording of the building. At times the view is interrupted by a car passing quickly. Through the movement the image is changing. The effect is as simple as subtle.

Daniel Burkhardt, * 1977 in Bochum, Germany, studied audio-visual media at the media art department at Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne (KHM). Since 1998 he developes and produces experimental videos, video concerts and installations.
Prizes: 2008: digital sparks award 08 of Fraunhofer-Institut IAIS and Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, Germany, at EMAF in Osnabrück. 13. Marl Video-Art Award of Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten in Marl. 2007: Jury’s award of 15. Festival für Video und Film, Bochum, KunstFilmBiennale Cologne. 2006: Special Prize of 12. Marl Video Art Award

EMAF ZIMMERKINO Januar 2011

EMAF Presents

AMERICAN HEROES

im Zimmerkino, Lohstrasse 45a, 49074 Osnabrück

14. Januar 2011, 20:30 h

EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL 2010

52 Card Cinema is an installation-based investigation into cinematic structures and interactive cinema viewership. The concept is simple: 52 cards, each printed with a unique identifier, are replaced in the subject’s view by the individual shots that make up a movie scene. The cards can be stacked, dealt, arranged in their original order or re-composed in different configurations, creating spreads of time. The technology used is marker-based augmented reality, where special printed markers are recognized in the video feed and pass data regarding their unique identifier, their position, and their orientation. The computer then feeds a display overlaying the video clips of each shot onto the appropriate card and continually mapping their position and orientation.
